  3. Free Resources vs. Personalized Tutoring

While free online resources can be a great starting point for chemistry students, they often fall short in delivering the customized, interactive support that truly helps students succeed. Here’s why one-on-one tutoring can make all the difference.

In our sessions, we skip the trial-and-error approach that often comes with self-study. I begin by assessing each student’s understanding of foundational concepts, even on topics they ‘think’ they know. This way, we’re not building on shaky ground before moving into the areas they find challenging. By focusing on each student’s unique strengths and weaknesses, we target specific gaps without wasting time on what they’re already comfortable with, making our time together both efficient and impactful.

A Structured, Curriculum-Focused Approach

My dedication to structured learning also means that I cover content aligned with their specific curriculum. This approach ensures that we don’t miss essential material and helps students tackle questions in a way that matches the marking scheme used in their exams. Since I’m familiar with various curricula—from content coverage to typical question types and difficulty levels—I can help students approach questions in a way that maximizes their scores. Students aren’t just learning chemistry; they’re learning how to excel on their specific tests.

Understanding Over Memorization

One of the biggest limitations of free resources is their focus on rote memorization. My approach is different: I emphasize real understanding. I encourage students to grasp the ‘why’ and ‘how’ behind each concept. Instead of just memorizing calorimetry formulas, for example, we explore how calorimetry plays out in real life—like in hot and cold packs or in calculating the caloric content of food. I also use screen-sharing simulations (like PhET) to visually demonstrate these processes, helping students make connections between abstract concepts and real-world applications.

Interactive Learning and Real-Time Feedback

Another advantage of one-on-one tutoring is the interactive nature of our sessions. When a student answers a question, I can instantly evaluate their understanding and adapt my approach as needed. This way, I can quickly fill in gaps that might go unnoticed in a typical online lesson. Students don’t have to second-guess themselves—they receive real-time feedback and clarification right then and there. This level of accountability also helps them stay motivated and focused, as they know their progress is being guided.

Step-by-Step Problem-Solving and Confidence Building

I use a structured problem-solving approach, moving from simpler problems to more complex, challenging ones. This gradual build-up reinforces their confidence and adaptability, which they need to succeed in exams and tackle real-world chemistry problems. Unlike pre-recorded videos, where no one is there to guide them through mistakes, students in my sessions gain insight into where they’re going wrong and how to fix it. This approach consistently leads to better grades, higher confidence, and a flexible understanding of chemistry concepts that they can apply beyond the classroom.

Final Thoughts

Free resources can be fantastic tools for motivated students. For those with a strong drive to learn independently, these materials can be very valuable. Such students develop resilience, self-discipline, and the determination to push through challenging situations. You don’t always need a tutor for every situation if you’re progressing well on your own.

In fact, when I was in high school back in 1998, I faced my own struggles with math and science. My parents could only invest in face-to-face tutoring for a few months. When my tutor moved far away, my father, who worked tirelessly, couldn’t make the long trips to continue the sessions. With no option for online tutoring, I had to find my own path. I stocked up on study guides, laid out all my reference books, and spent late nights figuring things out. I even helped classmates who were facing the same challenges. That hard work paid off—I reached the top of my class, and I gained skills that have stayed with me.

However, not every student thrives in the same way. Some may feel overwhelmed by their assignments, find themselves procrastinating, or even dread exams because they’re unsure where to begin. When students struggle to make headway despite their best efforts, personalized tutoring can make a powerful difference. A tutor provides clarity, structure, and support, helping students tackle difficult topics head-on and gain confidence.

The best approach? Combine the strength and resilience built from self-study with targeted, one-on-one support when needed. That way, students benefit from both independence and the focused guidance that gets them where they want to go.
