What the AP Chemistry exam is really testing

A common misconception is that AP Chemistry is mainly about memorising content.

In reality, the exam focuses much more on:

  • applying concepts to new situations

  • interpreting data, graphs, and experiments

  • explaining ideas clearly and logically

The exam is divided into:

  • Multiple-choice questions (50%)

  • Free-response questions (50%)

A large proportion of questions are:

  • data-based

  • multi-step

  • context-driven

This means that simply “knowing the topic” is not enough — students need to be able to use their knowledge in unfamiliar contexts.


 

Where students often lose marks

Even strong students lose marks because they:

  • don’t fully answer what the question is asking

  • skip steps in their reasoning

  • use vague or imprecise language

  • misinterpret graphs or data

In free-response questions especially, marks are awarded for:

  • correct reasoning

  • clear working

  • appropriate terminology

Students can lose marks even when they “know” the answer, simply because they don’t express it in the way examiners expect.

How I guide students to prepare effectively for AP Chemistry

One of the most important parts of doing well in AP Chemistry is not just working harder — it’s working smart.

Many students spend time on:

  • content that is not assessed

  • question styles that will not appear in the exam

  • memorising details that are not required

This often leads to frustration, because students are putting in effort without seeing the results they expect.

My role is to bring clarity to this.


Focusing on exactly what the AP exam requires

The AP Chemistry course is clearly defined by the College Board. The syllabus outlines:

  • what content is required

  • how that content is assessed

  • the types of questions that will be asked

I work closely within these guidelines so that students are always preparing for what is actually expected in the exam.

This means:

  • covering all required topics thoroughly

  • preparing students for the specific question styles they will encounter

  • avoiding content and extensions that are not part of the exam

Students are not asked to learn everything about chemistry — they are expected to understand and apply specific concepts in specific ways.

When this becomes clear, studying becomes much more focused and manageable.

A common difficulty is that students are often taught beyond what the AP exam requires.

While this can be useful academically, it can also:

  • take time away from exam preparation

  • create confusion about what is important

  • add unnecessary pressure

This allows students to:

  • focus their time more effectively

  • avoid unnecessary memorisation

    (Groups must be formed by students themselves — for example, classmates following the same syllabus.)

    Because I work across multiple time zones and curricula, I’m unable to create groups myself. However, if you already have a suitable group, I’m happy to discuss this option.

I’m Rose Kurian, a postgraduate in Chemistry with over 18 years of experience teaching chemistry across international curricula, including AP Chemistry.

Over the years, I’ve worked closely with AP students from different school systems and backgrounds, helping them not only understand the subject, but also how the AP Chemistry exam is assessed. Can you help improve AP scores?

I don’t guarantee specific results, as each student’s starting point and pace of progress can vary. My focus is on helping students build clear understanding and develop the exam skills they need to perform confidently.

How often should students have lessons?

It depends on the student’s needs and their timeline. Some students do weekly lessons for steady progress, while others increase frequency closer to tests, mocks, or exams. I’m happy to suggest a plan based on your child’s situation.

Do you provide homework or extra practice?

Yes, when appropriate. I often recommend targeted practice questions or short review tasks to help students retain concepts and improve exam performance without feeling overwhelmed.

Can students revisit lesson recordings?

Yes. Lessons are recorded so students can review explanations and reinforce their understanding.

My Story

My Journey: Reflecting on my tutoring journey takes me back to my high school days. Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology were my primary subjects, but unfortunately, some weren’t taught satisfactorily. l need extra support. However, back then, quality online tutoring wasn’t an option, and the logistics of reaching a tutor were challenging as my preferred tutor lived far away, making it difficult for my father to drive me there.

Determined to excel, I took matters into my own hands. I invested in comprehensive study materials and question banks for each subject. Alongside my textbooks, I meticulously delved into the pages, striving to grasp concepts and master every question from basic to advanced levels. During lunch breaks, I shared my newfound knowledge with peers who struggled to comprehend the material. Their positive feedback fueled my motivation to tutor. They expressed how my explanations resonated with them more than those of our teachers, finding clarity in what once seemed complex.

Soon, my desk became a hub of learning, attracting a flock of students seeking assistance. Classmates sought me out for quick clarifications on specific doubts or problems, and I took pride in resolving them swiftly yet comprehensively. My secret lay in empathizing with their struggles, having been there myself. I prioritized correcting misconceptions, filling learning gaps, and establishing solid foundations before delving into advanced concepts. Only when I ensured a strong grasp of fundamentals did I introduce alternative tips and tricks for quicker problem-solving.
