IB Chemistry SL & HL — Taught at the Level Your Course Demands
I teach IB Chemistry SL and HL in one-to-one lessons, following the current IB Chemistry guide and its assessment requirements, while adapting lessons to the expected depth, difficulty, and application at each level. I work with students across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and North America, including many who join mid-course or have fallen behind in the syllabus.
What is the difference between IB Chemistry SL and HL?
Both levels cover the core syllabus. HL adds the Additional Higher Level (AHL) content, explores shared topics in greater depth, and expects more demanding quantitative work and problem solving in unfamiliar contexts. The IB recommends approximately 150 teaching hours for SL and 240 for HL.
I align my tutoring closely with the expectations set out by the International Baccalaureate, so students are always working within the correct syllabus framework.

Choosing Chemistry With Your University Goals in Mind
Your choice of SL or HL can matter when you’re planning for university. Many competitive courses, particularly medicine and some science and engineering pathways, specify particular HL subjects and grades.
Entry requirements are set by each university and can change from year to year, so always confirm the current SL/HL and grade requirements directly with the universities and courses you’re applying to. The IB also advises checking requirements with each university (IB guidance)
- Medicine & Healthcare: Chemistry HL is required or strongly preferred by many medical programmes, often alongside a second HL science. Exact requirements vary by university. Compare requirements across UK medical schools (Medical Schools Council)

- Chemistry, Life Sciences & Veterinary: HL Chemistry is particularly useful, and may be required, for Chemistry, Biochemistry, Veterinary and some Life Science degrees.

- Engineering & Physical Sciences: Requirements vary considerably. Chemistry matters for some pathways, while Mathematics and Physics are more central to others.
- Other Pathways: SL may be entirely appropriate, depending on your degree, university and other IB subjects.
Always check before you choose. Look at the course page and admissions office of each university you're considering, and ask them directly if the requirements aren't clear. This applies especially to medicine, veterinary, dentistry and engineering, where requirements differ widely between countries and universities.

I’m Rose Kurian, a postgraduate in Chemistry with over 18 years of experience teaching chemistry across international curricula, including IB Chemistry SL and HL.
